Louis XII – suceeded his heirless cousin Charles VIII

As the proverb goes one man’s sorrow is another man’s joy. Louis XII all of a sudden became king of France, because his cousin didn’t have any heirs. He was crowned king in 1498.

The above picture was to show that Louis XII would be a great king just like King David.

Louis XII later earned the nickname father of the people. He got that name because he reduced taxes for common people, reformed the legal system and improved government. He was the first French king to call himself that. He probably lend this idea from the Italians that he fought during the Italians Wars.

When Louis XII became king he already had a wife, but he was working on getting the marriage annulled so that he could marry Anne of Brittany instead. Anne of Brittany had promised to marry him according to her marriage contract with Charles VIII but she gave Louis XII only one year to get his marriage with Joan annulled. Until that time she went back to Brittany to resume her duties as the duchess of Brittany.
