When Joanna and Philip met they came from very different backgrounds. Joanna grew up in a very religious family and her parents were very involved in her life and the lives of her siblings. Philip and his sister lost their mom when they were young, his sister moved away to France and his dad was usually in Austria while Philip was in Flanders. When Joanna and Philip met they didn’t have a language in common even though Joanna was fluent in 7 languages. Religion could have easily been a problem for the couple, because Joanna came from a very strict Catholic family while the people in the low countries slowly moved in the direction of Protestantism. But apparently Joanna came to enjoy the more relaxed attitude towards religion in Flanders even though her countrymen and parents didn’t approve of it. Religion didn’t cause a problem between Joanna and Philip, but it would eventually strain the relations between the Spanish who were in favor of the catholic church and the Dutch who were in favor of Protestantism. Joanna and Philip would have plenty of other problems in their marriage, but that had more to do with Philip’s infidelity and Joanna’s jealousy.

  1. I do not think Juana of Castile was mad. I do not think she had much options with a horrid husband like Philip the Handsome. It was a glorious day in 1506 when that man died. The Castilians hated him. Ferdinand of Aragon hated him.

    • I do think you got a fair point that he probably knew exactly how to push her buttons and a lot had to do with the men her father, her partner and her son wanting to rule instead of her.
